I was going to say that efficiency only incasrees consumption, but Ben got to that in his third paragraph. Unfortunately the future is now. These issues are upon us. The prick that burst the housing crisis was in fact high oil prices. I’ll post a Richard Heinberg lecture on the main page that addresses this. Personally I hope we don’t find a magic bullet fuel that will enable us to continue growth. If that happens we would only overshoot the Earths carrying capacity even farther, and therefore, when we reach another ecological limiter (water, or food) we would crash even harder. We need to stop trying to prop back up the rotten carcass of unfettered capitalism; transition off of fossil fuels to a combination of renewables; reduce consumption; reduce population; shift to local economies; increase local food production.
